God is a God of seasons

THE WORD IN FLESH IN EVERY SEASON OF SPIRITUAL LIFE

Beloved, there is something that the Christian must never forget: God is not dead, His Word is not dead, and His purpose is not finished. The God who spoke in Genesis is the same God who spoke through the prophets, the same God who was manifested in flesh in Jesus Christ, and the same God who is still working according to His eternal purpose.

God is a God of seasons.

There was a season for Noah. There was a season for Abraham. There was a season for Moses. There was a season for Elijah. There was a season for John the Baptist. There was a season when the Word became flesh and dwelt among men.

And every season had its Word.

Every season had its test.

Every season had its vessel.

Every season had its opposition.

And every season had people who recognized what God was doing—and people who missed it.

Therefore our subject is:

THE WORD IN FLESH IN EVERY SEASON OF SPIRITUAL LIFE.

And may God help us, because it is possible to love yesterday's revelation so much that we become blind to today's manifestation of the same eternal Word.

THE FATHER'S CUP

The Father's cup to His Son is sometimes very bitter, yet the Son must drink it!

There are cups that God puts into the hands of His children which do not look like blessings.

There are seasons in which the road becomes narrow.

There are seasons when prayer seems to become labor.

There are seasons when obedience costs something.

There are seasons when the heavens appear silent.

There are seasons when the child of God can scarcely understand why the Father is permitting certain experiences.

But remember Jesus.

In Gethsemane He said:

Matthew 26:39 KJV

“O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.”

The cup was bitter.

But the cup was necessary.

The Father was not against the Son.

The Father was leading the Son through the appointed course.

The bitterness was not evidence of abandonment.

The bitterness was part of the divine purpose.

The Father did not remove the cup because the Son was beloved.

Rather, because the Son was beloved, He was permitted to drink the cup appointed for Him.

And Hebrews tells us:

Hebrews 5:8 KJV

“Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;”

Oh, what a mystery!

The Son was not outside the will of God because He suffered.

He was in the very center of the will of God while He suffered.

Therefore, child of God, do not measure God's presence by the sweetness of your circumstances.

Sometimes the darkest valley is directly on the road to the brightest mountain.

Sometimes the bitterest cup is carrying the deepest purpose.

Sometimes what you call a delay is God's preparation.

Sometimes what you call rejection is God's separation.

Sometimes what you call defeat is the death of something that God never intended to live.

The Father's cup to His Son is sometimes very bitter, yet the Son must drink it!

THE LONE SOLDIER

For the lone soldier, Jesus, was dressed in garments as a servant—for the time and season appointed—at which ending in victory, He would be gloriously arrayed and crowned.

He came down.

He humbled Himself.

He took upon Him the form of a servant.

He walked among men.

He was despised.

He was rejected.

He was misunderstood.

He was mocked.

He was beaten.

He was crucified.

Yet heaven knew who He was.

The demons knew who He was.

The Father knew who He was.

And eventually the whole universe will know who He is.

Philippians 2:8-11 KJV

“And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow...”

Notice the order:

Humiliation before exaltation.

Suffering before glory.

The cross before the crown.

The servant's garment before the royal garment.

So do not despise the garment God has put upon you for your present season.

The garment may not look impressive.

The vessel may look ordinary.

The pathway may be lonely.

The ministry may be misunderstood.

But God dresses His Word in flesh the way He wants to achieve His purpose.

THE FATHER WAS NEVER FAR AWAY

By the outward look of things, it would appear like the Father was very far, not caring or unconcerned.

But no!

He was with Him and in Him all through.

The Father had His full pleasure as He indwelt the Son.

Jesus said:

John 10:30 KJV

“I and my Father are one.”

And again:

John 14:10 KJV

“Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me?”

Therefore when Jesus hung on Calvary, heaven had not lost control.

When the nails entered His hands, the eternal purpose had not failed.

When the crown of thorns was pressed upon His head, God had not been defeated.

When the darkness covered the land, God had not abandoned His Son.

The Father would, in love, tell His Son:

For this cause and course you were brought into this world.

You were brought here to restore all things to their perfect original state.

And these bitter and grueling moments and experiences you are passing through hold the secret of the divine purpose.

Hallelujah!

What a lesson for us.

There are things you are passing through today that you cannot explain.

But God may be working deeper than your understanding.

Do not throw away your confidence because you cannot interpret your circumstances.

The Word is greater than the circumstance.

TWO EYES LOOKED UPON ONE MAN

Now look at Jesus.

On the outside, Jesus the Christ appeared real Jewish, yet the Son of God was within!

One Man.

Two perceptions.

Two eyes.

Two conclusions.

The Samaritan woman at the well of Sychar looked upon Him and eventually recognized something beneath the outward appearance.

The religious eye of the Pharisees, Sadducees and scribes looked upon Him and saw only a Jewish man making what they considered blasphemous claims.

The woman said:

John 4:19 KJV

“Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.”

And later:

John 4:25 KJV

“I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.”

And Jesus answered:

John 4:26 KJV

“I that speak unto thee am he.”

There it is!

She saw beyond the garment.

They saw the garment and missed the glory.

She looked beyond the flesh and heard the Voice.

They examined the flesh and rejected the Word.

And this is the warning for every generation:

Do not become so familiar with the vessel that you become blind to what God is saying through the vessel.

GOD IS NOT A TRADITION

Same thing today!

Most religious systems are comfortable with a God who acted yesterday.

They can preach Moses.

They can preach Elijah.

They can preach Pentecost.

They can preach the apostles.

They can preach the early Church.

But the great question is:

What is God doing now?

Because God is not a tradition.

God is presently real as He ever was in any other generation.

The God who said “Let there be light” is still God.

The God who called Abraham is still God.

The God who spoke by the prophets is still God.

The God who manifested Himself in flesh is still God.

The God who raised Jesus from the dead is still God.

And God has not exhausted His purpose.

Hebrews 13:8 KJV

“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”

The same God.

The same nature.

The same faithfulness.

The same Word.

But different seasons of manifestation according to His eternal purpose.

GOD DRESSES HIS WORD IN FLESH

Remember this:

The Father dresses His Word in flesh the way He wants to achieve His purpose.

God does not always use the vessel that religion would select.

God does not always dress His purpose in the garment that tradition expects.

He may use Moses.

He may use Elijah.

He may use Amos.

He may use John.

He may use fishermen.

He may use shepherds.

He may use a Samaritan woman to carry a testimony back into a city.

And when the Word became flesh, He came through Bethlehem.

Not Jerusalem's palace.

Not Rome's throne.

Not the religious establishment.

Bethlehem!

A stable!

A manger!

A carpenter's household!

How could religious pride recognize Him?

Yet heaven recognized Him.

Angels announced Him.

Prophecy identified Him.

The Word testified of Him.

And the works proved Him.

WHAT MADE JESUS THE MESSIAH?

What made Jesus the Messiah?

Not His outward look and appearance!

But the testimony springing from His heart!

The record that He bore!

The profession that He accomplished!

The light that He shined!

The work that He wrought!

These are what identified Him.

Jesus said:

John 10:25 KJV

“...the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me.”

Again:

John 14:11 KJV

“Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.”

Therefore, do not judge merely by flesh and blood origin.

Look at what is being brought forth.

Wisdom is known by her children.

Jesus said:

Matthew 11:19 KJV

“...Wisdom is justified of her children.”

And again:

Matthew 7:20 KJV

“Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.”

Not by their knowledge.

Not by their rank.

Not by their appearance.

Not by their religion.

Not by their religious profession.

By their fruits!

THE CONTENT OF THE HEART

A man is what he is by the content of his heart and what he brings forth.

The heart eventually speaks.

The life eventually reveals.

The fruit eventually identifies.

You may polish the outside, but eventually the tree will produce its fruit.

You may have a title, but eventually the life will speak.

You may have an organization, but eventually the fruit will identify it.

You may have great religious vocabulary, but eventually the spirit behind the words will manifest itself.

Therefore, beloved, let us be careful.

Knowledge alone is not identification.

The Pharisees had knowledge.

But they missed Christ.

They knew Moses.

But they rejected the One of whom Moses wrote.

They knew prophecy.

But they rejected prophecy fulfilled before their eyes.

They knew the letter.

But they missed the Life.

THE SHEEP HEAR THE VOICE

What touches the hearts of His sheep and draws them to run after Him is what comes out of His heart.

The same is what sparks and ignites the hearts of His sheep to follow Him upon hearing the Word Voice of their day, and upon seeing the work of that Word upon their lives.

Jesus said:

John 10:27 KJV

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”

Notice:

Hear.

Know.

Follow.

The sheep do not merely hear sound.

They recognize the Voice.

And recognition produces movement.

The Voice calls.

The sheep hear.

The heart responds.

The feet follow.

That is true faith.

Faith is not merely admiring revelation.

Faith is walking in the light God has given.

THE VESSEL MAY BE EARTHY

The Great and all-knowing God dresses Himself basest to achieve the greatest, using His best chosen means for you and me—to achieve His best results in you—even in these times of the end.

Yes, the vessel may be as earthy as earth can be.

But it is the tool in the hand of God.

It is Samson—but eternal Elohim, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, prevailing!

Samson was weak when judged by himself.

But when the Spirit of God came upon him, the weakness of the vessel could not stop the strength of God.

Paul understood this principle:

2 Corinthians 4:7 KJV

“But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.”

Earthen vessels!

That means the glory belongs to God.

Do not worship the vessel.

But neither despise the vessel because it is earthen.

Use discernment.

Search the Scriptures.

Try the spirits.

Examine the fruit.

But do not reject God's work merely because His chosen vessel does not resemble the religious picture you painted in your mind.

THE DANGER OF THE RELIGIOUS VEIL

May God shine upon you and rend the veil of religion from your heart!

Because religion can become a veil.

Tradition can become a veil.

Human interpretation can become a veil.

Prejudice can become a veil.

Familiarity can become a veil.

And once the veil comes down over the heart, a man can stand before the very thing he prayed for and reject it because it did not come in the form he expected.

That is dangerous.

Very dangerous.

The Pharisees were waiting for Messiah.

And when Messiah came, they rejected Him.

Why?

Because He did not fit their interpretation.

Therefore, beloved, never tell God how He must fulfill His Word.

Let God tell you how He will fulfill His Word.

It is God who has the plan.

Not men.

SALVATION IS STILL MOVING TOWARD ITS CLIMAX

Look at this precious promise:

1 Peter 1:5 KJV

“Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”

Notice those words:

“Ready to be revealed in the last time.”

The climax of salvation is yet ahead.

All is working toward that final promise.

We have not reached the end of God's purpose.

We have not arrived at the fullness of perfection.

There is still something ahead.

Paul said:

1 Corinthians 13:9-10 KJV

“For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.”

And verse 12:

“For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face...”

Do you see it?

The promise of perfection is ahead.

Therefore we must press on.

DO NOT BUILD A CEMETERY AROUND YESTERDAY'S LIGHT

When God reveals Himself by His Word in any season, it is not meant for men to build a religious society around it and stagnate.

It is meant to help them press ahead still.

To go on gaining more ground.

To go deeper.

To know more.

To walk further.

To become more conformed to Christ.

There is a terrible danger in taking yesterday's move of God and turning it into today's prison.

What began as living revelation can become dead tradition when men stop moving.

A memorial can become a monument.

A monument can become a prison.

And a prison can become a graveyard.

God is still working.

God is still revealing.

God is still fulfilling His purpose.

Receive the light and continue expecting more.

Do not say:

“We have arrived.”

Say:

“Lord, lead me further.”

ARISE AND SHINE

Look at Isaiah:

Isaiah 60:1-2 KJV

“Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee.

For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.”

God sends light by His Word in every season.

And what does He say?

ARISE!

SHINE!

The light is not given merely to make you knowledgeable.

It is given to make you walk.

Don't build a religion around it.

Build your life around it.

Don't merely talk about the light.

Walk in the light.

Don't merely defend the revelation.

Become the revelation in your living.

THE HEN AND THE COCKROACH

There is a saying amongst the Luhya of Western Kenya:

“Because of gross darkness, a cockroach safely passed by a hen's mouth.”

What a picture!

The cockroach was there.

The hen was there.

The opportunity was there.

The food was there.

But gross darkness prevented the hen from seeing what was right before her.

So the hen went hungry while the cockroach escaped.

And spiritually, what a warning!

The religious world can be so surrounded by tradition that the very Bread of Life can pass before them—and they will not recognize it.

The Word working today is spiritually delicious!

It is Bread from heaven.

But mother hen is sure to miss it so long as she veils herself with the dark veil of religious traditions.

She may be staring directly at the answer while praying for the answer.

She may be waiting for God while rejecting what God is doing.

She may be asking for light while closing her eyes to the light that has come.

Gross darkness!

Therefore:

Watch and pray.

Watch by the Word.

Pray by the Spirit.

Test everything.

Discern everything.

Do not be trapped in worldly surfeiting.

Jesus warned:

Luke 21:34 KJV

“And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life...”

The hour is too late to sleep.

The stakes are too high to play religion.

The Bride must awaken.

HOW FAR IS HOME?

And so the poet breaks forth:

How far from home?

I asked as I bent my steps.

The watchman spoke back:

“The long dark night is almost gone,The morning soon will break.Then sleep no more, but speed thy flight,With hope's bright star, thy guiding ray,Till thou shalt reach the realms of light,In everlasting day.”

Oh, Church, sleep no more!

The night is almost gone.

The morning is coming.

Do not lie down now.

Do not quit now.

Do not turn back now.

Do not exchange eternal things for temporal things now.

Speed thy flight!

The morning is coming!

I ASKED THE WARRIOR

Then I asked the warrior on the field.

This was his soul-inspiring song:

“With courage, bold the sword I'll wield,The battle is not long.Then weep no more, but well endure the conflict,Till thy work is done.For this we know, the prize is sure,When victory is won.”

Amen!

The battle is not forever.

The conflict has an appointed end.

The tears have an appointed end.

The trials have an appointed end.

The wilderness has an appointed end.

The night has an appointed end.

But the promise has no end.

Therefore, warrior, endure!

Soldier, stand!

Bride, awaken!

Saint, press on!

ETERNITY IS NIGH

I asked again, and earth, sea and sun seemed with one voice to make reply:

“Time's wasting, sands are nearly run,Eternity is nigh.

Then weep no more, with warning tones,Portentous signs are thickening round,The whole creation groans,To hear the trumpet sound.”

Can you hear it?

The whole creation groans.

Romans 8:22 says:

“For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.”

Something is coming.

Something is approaching.

The sands are running.

Eternity is nigh.

Therefore, watch!

Therefore, pray!

Therefore, keep your lamp burning!

Therefore, do not allow religion to blind you!

Do not allow tradition to make you miss the Voice.

Do not allow the cares of this life to choke the Word.

Do not allow yesterday's revelation to become a prison against tomorrow's promise.

Do not allow bitterness to make you abandon the Father's purpose.

Remember Jesus.

The Father's cup was bitter, yet the Son drank it.

And after the cup came resurrection.

After the cross came the crown.

After humiliation came exaltation.

After the servant's garment came glory.

NOT FAR FROM HOME

And then comes the blessed thought:

Not far from Home!

O blessed thought!

The traveller's longing, lonely heart to cheer.

The thought that has often brought a healing balm and dried the mourner's tear.

Then weep no more!

Because we shall meet where weary footsteps never roam.

Our trials past.

Our joys complete.

Safe in our Father's Home!

Hallelujah!

That is where the road is going.

That is where the battle is going.

That is where the revelation is going.

That is where the suffering is going.

That is where the pressing is going.

Home!

PRESS ON A LITTLE HARDER

So tonight, beloved, I leave you with this:

Do not stop.

If the road is bitter, drink the cup.

If the garment is humble, wear it.

If the vessel is earthy, look for the treasure.

If the night is dark, watch for the morning.

If religion has built a veil, ask God to rend it.

If tradition has blinded your eyes, ask God for living light.

If the battle is fierce, remember that the prize is sure.

If you know only in part, keep pressing toward the perfect.

If you have received light, arise and shine.

If you have heard the Voice, follow.

If you have recognized the Word, live it.

If you have fallen, rise again.

If the Father's cup is bitter, drink it in obedience.

Because the same Father who permits the cup has already appointed the victory.

And the same God who hides Himself in an earthen vessel will one day reveal the fullness of His glory.

The Word in flesh in every season.

The Word speaking.

The Word working.

The Word being manifested.

The Word bringing forth its own kind.

The Word identifying its own sheep.

The Word carrying us from faith to faith, from glory to glory, until that which is perfect is come.
