Text: Revelation 19:6 (KJV)

“And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.”

The declaration, “The Lord God omnipotent reigneth,” is one of the most powerful proclamations in Scripture. It declares that God possesses unlimited power and that His authority is supreme over heaven, earth, humanity, nations, creation, life, and eternity.

The word omnipotent means all-powerful. God is not merely powerful; He is the Almighty. There is no power greater than His power, no authority above His authority, and no circumstance beyond His ability to control.

Yet when we speak about the omnipotence of God, we must understand that His power is not demonstrated only through destruction, judgment, or the overthrow of His enemies. God's power is equally revealed—and perhaps most beautifully revealed—in His ability to save, sustain, preserve, provide, restore, protect, forgive, and care for the human race.

God's omnipotence is both a fearful reality to those who oppose Him and a comforting reality to those who trust Him.

GOD IS OMNIPOTENT—HE IS THE ALMIGHTY GOD

Revelation 19:6 does not simply say that God has power. It declares:

“The Lord God omnipotent reigneth.”

God's power has no equal.

Human power has limitations. Kings have limitations. Governments have limitations. Wealth has limitations. Science and technology have limitations. Human strength eventually fails.

But God has no such limitation.

He created the heavens and the earth. He spoke, and creation came into existence. He commanded the sea, and it obeyed Him. He gave life to man and sustains all creation by His power.

God does not need another power to strengthen His power. He does not need another authority to establish His authority.

He reigns because He is God.

GOD'S OMNIPOTENCE IS SEEN IN CREATION

One of the first places we see God's unlimited power is in creation.

Genesis 1:1 says:

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”

God did not inherit creation. He did not discover it. He created it.

He spoke, and light appeared.

He commanded, and the waters were gathered. He established the sun, moon, and stars.

He created living creatures.

And finally, He created humanity.

Creation itself is a testimony that God is omnipotent.

The heavens declare that there is a God whose power is beyond human comprehension.

When we look at creation, we see that our God is not a limited God. He is the God who possesses power over everything He has created.

GOD'S OMNIPOTENCE IS SEEN IN HIS POWER TO DESTROY EVIL

The Bible certainly reveals God's destructive power when He judges sin and evil.

He cast angels that sinned into chains of darkness.

God destroyed the world with the flood in the days of Noah.

He stopped the building of the tower of Babel.

He burned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.

He brought judgment upon Egypt.

He caused the walls of Jericho to fall.

He defeated armies that appeared stronger than His people.

Throughout Scripture, God demonstrates that no enemy can ultimately resist His authority.

Revelation 19 itself presents God as the victorious King whose purposes cannot be overturned.

But we must be careful not to define God's omnipotence only by His ability to destroy.

God's power to destroy is only one expression of His omnipotence.

The same God who can bring down kingdoms can also raise the broken.

The same God who can defeat armies can also save one sinner.

The same God who can command the sea can also calm a troubled heart.

The same God who can judge the world can also extend mercy to the repentant.

GOD'S GREATEST DISPLAY OF POWER IS HIS POWER TO SAVE

One of the most wonderful expressions of God's omnipotence is His power to save.

Human beings can build houses, cities, nations, and technologies, but humanity cannot save itself from sin.

Sin brought separation from God.

Human effort cannot remove the guilt of sin.

Money cannot purchase salvation.

Education cannot provide salvation.

Human strength cannot conquer the power of sin and death.

But God can save.

This is why the coming of Jesus Christ is such a powerful demonstration of God's omnipotence.

God's power was revealed not merely when Christ performed miracles, but when Christ gave Himself for the salvation of humanity.

The cross may have appeared to the world as weakness, but through that apparent weakness God accomplished a mighty work of redemption.

The resurrection demonstrates that death itself could not overcome the power of God.

Jesus Christ died, but He rose again.

The grave could not hold Him.

Death could not defeat Him.

Sin could not have the final word.

Therefore, God's omnipotence is revealed in the gospel:

God has the power to save the sinner.

GOD'S OMNIPOTENCE IS SEEN IN HIS POWER TO FORGIVE

There are things human beings can do for one another, but there is one thing that ultimately belongs to God: the forgiveness of sin.

A person may regret what he has done.

A person may try to correct his mistakes.

A person may promise to become better.

But only God can cleanse the sinner and restore him to fellowship with Himself.

That is why the grace of God is such a powerful demonstration of His omnipotence.

God can take a person whose life has been broken by sin and give that person a new beginning.

He can take guilt and replace it with forgiveness.

He can take shame and replace it with grace.

He can take a life moving in the wrong direction and turn it toward Himself.

This is the power of the Almighty.

He does not merely destroy the sinner; He provides a way for the sinner to be saved.

GOD'S OMNIPOTENCE IS SEEN IN HIS POWER TO CARE FOR HUMANITY

God's power is also demonstrated in His care.

Sometimes we think of power only as the ability to conquer an enemy. But there is tremendous power in sustaining life.

God gives us breath.

God provides food.

God gives rain.

God sustains creation.

God gives strength to the weak.

God comforts the brokenhearted.

God hears the prayers of His people.

God watches over His children.

The Lord Jesus taught in Matthew 6:26 (KJV):

“Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them.”

If God cares for the birds of the air, how much more does He care for human beings created in His image?

God's omnipotence is therefore not cold or distant.

The Almighty God is also the caring God.

His power is not merely power over us; it is power exercised for His purposes and, in His mercy, for our good.

GOD HAS POWER TO SUSTAIN WHAT HE CREATES

It is one thing to create something, but God also has the power to sustain it.

God did not create humanity and then abandon humanity.

He continues to uphold creation.

He continues to give life.

He continues to provide opportunities for repentance.

He continues to demonstrate mercy.

Every day that a person wakes up is another testimony that God has sustained life.

Every breath is a reminder that our existence is dependent upon Him.

We are not self-sustaining creatures.

We live because God permits us to live.

Therefore, when we say:

“The Lord God omnipotent reigneth,”

we are declaring that our lives remain under the authority and providence of the Almighty.

GOD HAS POWER TO RESTORE THE BROKEN

Another beautiful expression of God's omnipotence is His ability to restore.

Human beings can break things that they cannot repair.

Sin can break relationships.

Pain can break hearts.

Disappointment can break courage.

Loss can leave deep wounds.

But God has power to restore.

He can restore hope.

He can restore joy.

He can restore purpose.

He can restore fellowship.

He can restore a life that has been damaged by sin.

God's power is therefore not only seen in bringing things to an end.

Sometimes God's greatest work is seen in bringing something back to life.

He can take what appears hopeless and bring hope.

He can take what appears dead and bring life.

He can take what appears lost and restore it according to His will.

GOD'S OMNIPOTENCE GIVES US HOPE IN IMPOSSIBLE SITUATIONS

There are circumstances in life where human strength reaches its limit.

There are situations where we can say, “I have done everything I can do.”

But when human ability ends, God's ability does not end.

Jesus said in Matthew 19:26 (KJV):

“With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.”

This does not mean that God will grant every human desire. It means that God's ability is not restricted by the limitations that restrict us.

What is impossible for man is not impossible for God.

Therefore, the omnipotence of God gives believers hope.

When we cannot see a way, God can make a way.

When we cannot carry the burden, God can sustain us.

When we cannot change the situation, we can still trust the God who reigns over it.

GOD'S OMNIPOTENCE IS A COMFORT TO THOSE WHO TRUST HIM

The statement “The Lord God omnipotent reigneth” is not merely a declaration of God's authority; it is also a declaration of comfort.

If God reigns, then chaos does not have the final word.

If God reigns, evil does not have the final word.

If God reigns, suffering does not have the final word.

If God reigns, death does not have the final word.

If God reigns, the believer can trust Him even when he does not understand everything that is happening.

The believer may not understand God's method, but he can trust God's sovereignty.

He may not know what tomorrow holds, but he knows who holds tomorrow.

THE OMNIPOTENT GOD IS BOTH JUST AND MERCIFUL

God's omnipotence must also be understood together with His character.

God is powerful, but His power is not arbitrary.

He is holy.

He is righteous.

He is just.

He is merciful.

He is loving.

He is compassionate.

His power is exercised consistently with His divine nature.

Therefore, the God who judges sin is also the God who calls sinners to repentance.

The God who has authority to condemn is also the God who offers salvation.

The God who can destroy has chosen to demonstrate mercy.

This is one of the great mysteries and beauties of God's character.

His omnipotence does not make Him distant from humanity; His love causes Him to reach toward humanity.

 “THE LORD GOD OMNIPOTENT REIGNETH”

The word “reigneth” is important.

God does not merely possess power.

He reigns.

To reign means to rule as King.

God's power is connected to His authority. He is not struggling to become King. He is not waiting for permission to rule. He is not competing with another God.

He is the sovereign Lord. And Revelation 19:6 gives us the response of heaven to this truth:

“Alleluia.”

Praise belongs to God because He reigns. The multitude in heaven does not respond with fear alone. They respond with worship.

They declare:

“Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.”

The omnipotence of God therefore produces worship. When we understand who God is, our response should be praise.

The words of Revelation 19:6 give us a profound declaration: “The Lord God omnipotent reigneth.”

He reigns because He is the Almighty.

He reigns over creation. He reigns over nations. He reigns over history. He reigns over life and death. He reigns over every power and authority.

But His omnipotence should not be understood only through destruction and judgment.

His power is also seen in His ability to save the lost, forgive the sinner, sustain the weak, provide for humanity, protect His people, restore the broken, give hope to the hopeless, and preserve life.

The hand that has power to judge also has power to save. The voice that can command the storm can also speak peace to the troubled heart.

The God who can bring down kingdoms can lift up the broken. The God who conquered death can give eternal life.

The Almighty is not only the God of power. He is the God whose power is expressed through mercy, grace, love, salvation, provision, and care.

Therefore, when circumstances are beyond our strength, we can remember:

The Lord God omnipotent reigneth. When we face impossible situations:

The Lord God omnipotent reigneth. When we need salvation: The Lord God omnipotent reigneth.

When we are weak:

The Lord God omnipotent reigneth. When we need provision: The Lord God omnipotent reigneth.

When we need restoration:

The Lord God omnipotent reigneth. And when we look toward the future with faith, we can join the heavenly multitude and declare:

“ALLELUIA: FOR THE LORD GOD OMNIPOTENT REIGNETH.”

Amen.
